What is AI Search?
AI search describes the growing set of tools, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, that answer user questions directly instead of returning a ranked list of links.
AI search is the umbrella term for the shift away from the traditional "type a query, get ten blue links" model toward tools that read the web on a user's behalf and hand back a synthesized answer, often with sources cited, sometimes without. ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Claude are all examples: each one crawls or retrieves content, reasons over it, and produces a direct response rather than a results page for the human to sort through.
For a business, AI search changes the mechanics of being found. In classic search, ranking in position one to three was the goal, because that's what got clicked. In AI search, the goal is being one of the (usually few) sources an engine chooses to cite, or being referenced by name inside the generated answer even without a clickable link. That's a smaller, more competitive slot, and it rewards different things: clear, directly-stated answers; structured data that removes ambiguity; and a track record of being cited elsewhere on the web, since many AI systems weight source credibility heavily.
The practical effect is that AI search often produces zero-click outcomes: the user gets what they needed without ever visiting a website. That's genuinely difficult for businesses that rely on site visits to drive calls, bookings, or sales, being "mentioned" by an AI engine with no click doesn't show up in Google Analytics the way a ranked link does, which is part of why dedicated AI citation tracking has become its own category of measurement rather than something existing SEO tools can quietly absorb.
Ritam Labs treats AI search visibility as something that has to be tested directly rather than inferred from traditional rankings. The AI Citation Score dimension runs live, real-world queries through Perplexity, Gemini, ChatGPT, and Claude, the actual AI search surfaces a customer might use, and reports whether the business was cited, what was said, and who got cited instead when it wasn't. That's the difference between guessing you're AI-search-ready and knowing whether you currently show up.
