What is AI Citation Score?
The AI Citation Score measures whether real AI engines, Perplexity, Gemini, ChatGPT, and Claude, actually cite a business today, based on live test queries rather than theoretical readiness.
Most AI-readiness checks work by inspecting a page and estimating how "AI-friendly" it looks: does it have schema, does it use question-shaped headings, is it structured cleanly. That's useful, but it's a proxy. It answers "could this content plausibly be cited?" rather than "was this business actually cited, today, by a real AI engine, when someone asked a real question?" The AI Citation Score is built to answer the second question directly.
The mechanism is straightforward in concept and demanding in execution: run the kinds of questions a real customer would actually type, "best [service] in [city]," "who does [specific thing] near me," through live AI engines, Perplexity, Gemini, ChatGPT, and Claude, and record what happens. Was the business named? Was it linked? Was a competitor cited instead, and if so, why might that competitor have won the citation, better structured content, more third-party mentions, clearer service descriptions? The score isn't a guess; it's a verdict backed by the actual query and the actual response.
This live-testing approach matters because AI answer behavior is not static and not fully predictable from first principles. Two businesses with near-identical on-page optimization can get very different citation outcomes depending on factors that are hard to audit statically: how each AI model currently weighs recency, how it resolves ambiguous local intent, or which third-party sources it trusts more for a given category. A score based purely on page inspection would miss all of that. A score based on live queries captures reality as it actually behaves right now.
Within a Ritam Labs audit, the AI Citation Score is dimension D16, deliberately placed alongside, not folded into, the more structural AEO/GEO Readiness dimension (D3), because "structured for extraction" and "actually extracted" are different claims and both deserve their own number. When a business isn't being cited, the report doesn't just say so, it shows who got cited instead and links straight to the relevant fix generators and the AI Crawler Visibility and AEO/GEO dimensions most likely to close the gap. Coverage today spans Perplexity, Gemini, ChatGPT, and Claude, with Grok and DeepSeek planned as additional engines.
