What is Featured Snippet?
A featured snippet (or answer box) is a highlighted excerpt Google pulls from a webpage and displays at the top of search results to directly answer a query.
A featured snippet, sometimes called an answer box or "position zero," is a highlighted block Google shows at the very top of a search results page, above the normal ranked list, pulling a specific excerpt, a paragraph, a numbered list, a table, directly from a webpage that it judges best answers the query. Unlike a normal organic listing, which just shows a title and a short meta description, a featured snippet shows the actual answer itself, along with a link and title crediting the source page.
Featured snippets are selected algorithmically from pages Google already considers strong candidates for the query, and they favor content that answers a question clearly and concisely near the top of the relevant section: a direct one- or two-sentence answer to a "what is" question, a clean numbered list for a "how to" query, or a well-structured table for a comparison. Content buried in dense paragraphs, or answers that require reading several paragraphs of preamble first, rarely win the snippet even if the underlying page ranks well overall.
Winning a featured snippet is valuable because it's highly visible real estate above every other result, but it's also a double-edged outcome: it's one of the biggest drivers of zero-click search, since a user often gets the full answer they needed right there and never clicks through. The tradeoff is usually worth it anyway, being the source Google trusted enough to feature carries brand visibility and credibility even without the click, and it also happens to be one of the clearest practice runs for AEO: a page structured well enough to win a featured snippet is very often also structured well enough for an AI engine to extract and cite.
Ritam Labs' AEO/GEO Readiness dimension (D3) checks for exactly the structural patterns that earn both featured snippets and AI citations: question-shaped headings, extractable passages positioned near the top of a section, and supporting schema like FAQPage markup that makes the answer's boundaries unambiguous to both Google and AI engines.
